Addicted.....me?
When we talk of addiction, we often associate the word with drugs or alcohol which are the obvious choices, but is addiction only limited to those things?
Well, I think you will agree that it is not, or I'm sure that by the time you have read this article you will see just how big the problem actually is.
Millions of People all over the world are either addicted to or dependant upon something, the sad fact is that some people just dont realise it, or in many cases they do; but just dont want to admit to it.
This creates a problem for us in the body of Christ because an addiction / dependancy can become an idol and ultimately lead us away from the will of God
There are those who would argue and assure you that they are in control of whatever it is they are doting on, and have even convinced themselves of the same, but really what they have begun to do is to
create a different kind of God for themselves; a God that will overlook them putting their own desires first and God second (Check the 10 Commandments - Exodus 20)
So what about these addictions then?
Let's take a look at an example list of addictions / dependencies:
Sex (Porn) through TV / DVD / Video / Internet etc
Computers / Copying games & movies / software / ps2 / xbox etc
Shopping / buying unneccesary items just to experience the "feelgood" factor
Gossiping / pulling people down / covetousness
Money / false sense of security / greed
Materialism / covetousness / Just take at look at this mate! I bet you wish you.......
Approval the need to please "everyone", but does that include God first?
Indeed this list can go on and on, but I think we get the general picture that this is a much bigger problem than at first glance.
I guess the question on your mind now is "am I addicted to something?", now when you begin to psychoanalyse yourself or those around you please bear in mind that you do not need to go overboard and start worrying unduly, after all I enjoy shopping for something new as much as the next person, but it is not something I "need" to do to make me feel better, nor would I go and buy it if I didn't really need it "just for the sake of it" or habitually.
Yet, there are people to whom many of these things (including shopping) are a "therapy", or at least thats what they think, but it is actually an addiction or dependancy which can ultimately lead to bondage and worse still sin!
Let's look at a typical scenario, a smoker (obviously dependant) he or she reaches for and lights a cigarette and claims to "enjoy" it!, but what they are actually enjoying is the relief from the cravings and the habit, because by smoking the cigarette they are satisfying both of those needs and it is no different, although more severe for drug addicts
Similarly, many people are addicted to approval, to be accepted by everyone, and will stretch their (and God's) rules to acheive just that, I know I can speak with authority on this particular one as I too was an approval addict, constantly stretching my own boundaries to get a "pat on the back". Don't misunderstand me, it is nice to feel appreciated, but the key word here is "feel", we get addicted to the feeling, and before you know where you are, you are an approval addict.
I can sense that some readers may think this is a little over the top; but please trust me it isn't. Just take this simple scenario.
Some person you really like, love (or admire) comes to you and asks you to deliver a package for them; you don't get chance to ask what's in it, but you suspect it may be drugs or stolen goods. Now if you sucessfully deliver the package, that person is going to be so very happy with you and lift your name up in the "right circles" as being someone good & reliable, but on the other hand if you don't then you run the risk of being branded a "lamer" and someone who is "unworthy" to belong "in the elite". But....the most important thing to consider here is who are you going to please? the person making the request or God? - You have to choose my friend, do you go for the sense of approval, or do you remain Faithful to God ? remember that your heart can be very deceitful - even unto yourself.
The moral issue here is to always be aware as to what you are doing and forever keeping yourself in check, because the enemy is constantly looking for new ways to get a foothold into your life; something he can build upon, and he does it in the most subtle of ways. Learn to be totally honest with yourself, and take a firm hold of the freedom that can only be found in Christ Jesus, because in him, you are free indeed!.
If you are affected by any of these issues or even something not mentioned here, please do contact us and I promise that we will Pray with you, and for you so that you can recieve the freedom that Jesus came to give YOU. Always remember my friend, Jesus suffered too much for you to be in bondage, read this Bible passage and take Heart.
Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
The Lord knows of your struggles my dear friend, but God wants you to choose, and once you make that right choice and allow God to Minister to the very deepest parts of your being you will quickly begin to enjoy a freedom that you yet can not even imagine because as the Scriptures tell us in Luke 1:37 - "Nothing is impossible with God!"
God Bless you, always.
